My Royal Doulton with the Hand-Painted Periwinkles! (Hyacinth)
oil on panel, 10x10"
A lot of my recent portraits have been influence by television. This particular portrait is of Hyacinth, the main character of a show called Keeping Up Appearances. In particular the discussions on class and masking your upbringing resonate with me, and are aspects of the show that I find humor around. Maybe you will too!
This issue of class and displays of wealth is also present in Honey Boo Boo and The Real Housewives series. The more trinkets/ adornments a person has, the more wealthy they must be, and our culture places importance in this attribute. It can make up for other areas where a person is lacking (understanding, awareness, kindness, etc) and I wonder about the health and ethics that view point holds. Humor certainly is a fabulous way to enter into the conversation.
