Merry Kitschmas! |
As a female artist living in San Francisco during COVID-19, I created this collection of new original oil paintings as my artist response to the crisis. Cheery and bright, this Merry Kitschmas! collection of 25 small-scale, oil paintings acts as my artist's response to social distancing and isolation due to the pandemic. Each painting, executed in oil on panel, is a portrait-style celebration of a kitschy, holiday, still life object often with paired with a brassy feminist title.
In Merry Kitschmas! I’ve combined nostalgic, still life objects like dancing santa ornaments and jingle bells with pale pink backgrounds. This specific pink color is known to ease anxiety in viewers. This collection of oil paintings is meant to call up cozy memories of the past, all sprinkled with kitschy elements. I’ve decided to dive into kitsch with this body of work, as a means to make the work accessible, relatable and therefore more widely impactful. My research on nostalgia, kitsch and the color pink for this collection is shared in my artist blog. With a dash of humor and kitschy nostalgia, I present Merry Kitschmas! |
