Honey Boo Boo's Amurrican Starquest

Honey Boo Boo's
Amurrican Starquest

My gestural approach to painting contemplates the notions of female power, and the ethics of entertainment as it enters into the discourse of painting.  My body of work Honey Boo Boo’s Amurrican Starquest references reality television, the world of Hello Kitty, child beauty pageants, and Brecht’s Threepenny Opera. By emphasizing the artificial display of happiness with over-the-top dripping spectacle of paint and well-practiced facial expressions, the paintings critique the type of images that American viewers have become so attached. This inquiry into the power dynamics of grotesque performer and entertained audience questions the ethics of fascination.
